Can anyone help me identify this substance on the backside my shi shi camellias? PLANTA diagnosis says mold, but this looks like bugs to me :(

    Looks like a really bad case of mealybugs to me but I’m no expert. I would say if it’s that you can just use rubbing alcohol 70% or some neem oil or both… and if you take a qtip and dip it in the rubbing alcohol and touch it to them and they turn brown or yellow then you’ll know that’s what it is…. You can also look on different videos online to help with finding other homemade remedies to remove them as well…

    This is actually scale. Camellias are susceptible to scale and it is very difficult to eradicate. You will need to cut back infested branches and do research on proper treatment. They may not fully go away but if you can keep it under control it should be okay.

      Thanks, Mara! I did prune them yesterday attempting to remove as much as I could find. Luckily it’s o my on the backside so that don’t look too mangled :(
