Stole this plant from staff at the place I’m staying, she’s been repotted in an indoor mix with extra pearlite mixed in, placed in front of a north facing window (southern hemisphere) what else can I do to nurse her back to life ? Previously she was outside under a patio that gets little light
Well done for rescuing this baby! Watch out as that pot might be a bit too big for the size of that root ball. The danger is root rot but it’s good you’ve mixed in perlite. In terms of light, all of my plants from this family live under grow lights. I’m assuming you’re in AU? For my plants not under grow lights, I tend to keep these guys out of direct sunshine except morning sun - that’s generally fine unless you’re not on one of the coasts. I lived 6 hours inland last year and by 9am in spring-summer the morning sun was quite intense so I tended not to have too many plants next to the window. Unless you’re blasting heating or AC, the humidity is generally fine for these guys inside the house. If you’re in a more tropical area, you’re very lucky because this plant will be much happier and should be less fussy. I’ve always been given the advice to use filtered or distilled water with these plants. I don’t personally do that because I don’t mind crispy tips, but I do condition the water using aquarium conditioner to remove the chlorine and chloramine. Best of luck with your baby! 🌱🌱🌱
1 LikeYea I didn’t have any smaller pots (I have some now but I’m worried about traumatising it by moving) looking into grow lights- currently the window gets filtered sun throughout most of the day- I’m looking into grow lights to help supplement. Heater is being used a fair bit but all the plants get time in a pre steamed shower each week
0 Likes Totally fair enough. These types of plants do like a reasonable amount of consistency so in their conditions, the temp and humidity are big ones here. Have you for a temp and humidity meter? They’re very inexpensive to buy online or at Bunnings or garden stores. A great investment and will give you good data about the temp and humidity around your plant. You can then use that to make an informed decision about what might need changing. For example if the heater is on and that decreases the humidity, you could supplement using a humidifier. I generally aim to keep it between 50-60% in the house and my plants are pretty happy at that level. Just a tip if you are going to get a temp and humidity meter, I bought a digital one online that connects to my phone via Bluetooth. What I found was that this gives me an idea about what the temp and humidity drop down to at night and during the coldest parts of the year etc, this changed my plant care and also helped explain why some of my alocasias and caladiums dropped all their leaves (dormancy). Anyway, very ranty but hopefully that was helpful 🙃
