So in a previous post I had told you about a Princess of Hanover propagation. The leaf itself actually had a new leaf growing right where the stem connects to the leaf. I took the leaf and cut it up. I cut the new growing leaf out from the main leaf. I cut the stem it 2 and planted them horizontally. I used a mix of 2 parts potting soil to 1 part perlite. Lightly watered and put a lid on. The problem is that my propagation container was very flat and the one prop was getting close to the lid. So I needed to transplant to a new container. I had a small 3” pot that Costa Farms uses for plants the ship to Lowes. That would work. But how to keep the moisture in? I really didn’t want a ziplock bag. Could I find something more elegant? I remembered we had some clear Solo cups downstairs. I grabbed one and sure enough it fit perfectly over the lip of the pot. I filled the pot with some Coast of Maine, Cape Neddick blend. I the took a spoon and gently scooped the prop out with it soil to keep the roots intact and laid it on top. Gave just a trickle of water and put on its new humidity dome. It now has room to grow more. Let’s see what it does.

So I had heard that Home Depot had some of these. So I stopped at one in Harrisburg PA and sure enough I found just one… on the discount table. $20 reduced to $10 and it was in sad shape. Stems drooping over the pot edge, only the biggest leaf standing. However there was new growth at the bottom, with 4 new leaves that looked pretty good. So what did I do? I left it there. I thought too much work. But I also thought maybe it just needed some water. The next day, after doing some more research on Masoniana, I determined that this might be a Lonely Rock or Mountain because of the black border around the edge of the leaves. I should have bought it! So the next day after work, I headed back to the same Home Depot. Would it still be there? Sure enough it was still there looking as forlorn as ever. I gently scooped it up, paid my $10 and took it home. At home, I gave it some water and then had to leave and go to my granddaughter’s house. When I came back it looked like you see it in the pictures. The drooping was gone. It just needed a little water and someone to care.

Pot for my polka dot? Just adopted this polka dot begonia (my first). She’s in a 6” tall x 5” wide plastic “takeout” container and I’m trying to decide which type of pot to move her into. Clay seems to be best, but I hear conflicting information on whether begonias should be in shallow pots. Should I keep her in something tall or shorter but wider? Is she a normal height for her type?

Looking for an ID on this one. Got this at Lowe’s on clearance. Any ideas? Leaves are about 2”.

Another Lowes purchase I am trying to identify. I think this might be a young Jurassic Pink Flash. It just hasn’t matured enough for the pink to appear. What do you think?

So I bought from Lowes what I thought was a Begonia Escargot, but it turns out it was actually a Princess of Hanover. Anyway, all the leaves died back, but before that happened I had grabbed a leaf to propagate in water. The propagation has lots of roots and you can see mini leaves starting to appear. It is even shooting a new bud at the top of the leaf. Now eventually I want to move this to soil. I assume I should plant the developing rhizome horizontally on the soil just below the surface. I don’t think it should be vertically because then some of the young leaves would be buried too deep in the soil. Does that seem correct? Should I let the new leaves get bigger before transplanting to soil? What about the bud at the top of the leaf? Should I cut the leaf off with bud and plant that in another pot? My plan for going to soil will to be to keep it well watered the first two weeks as that has been what it has been used to as it gradually acclimates to soil. Any thoughts on this?

Ok sooo this is my first begonia. And it’s a massive maculata that’s desperately needs a new stake, or multiples. There are 7 different vines or growth points. How are these guys meant to be? Staked or training? And how would would stake something like this without making it look like a school science project 😂 any ideas please really need it with this one. TIA 🙏🌿

My begonia ‘corallina de lucerna’ is growing a new leaf. This is a successful propagated cutting.

Is this a Silver Dollar Rex? Picked this up at Lowe’s on clearance and it was just labeled as Rex Begonia.

Got this Rex Begonia Fireworks on my Birthday 11/29 from our local greenhouse here in Central Pa. Believe it or not it was only $14.99. It is in a 6” plastic pot. I added the apple for perspective. The Apple is 2” across. The leaves are monsters. There are even new leaves coming below. I have had some leaves turn brown on me from over watering. I’ll have to watch that.

I took two leaf cuttings a few months ago from a rex begonia of some kind and the new plants are getting off to a wonderful start! Kept in water for approx. three weeks then transitioned to my soil mix!

Is pruning begonias a thing? This is the first time I’ve owned one and mine is looking pretty leggy! The pot fits on the windowsill but I’m nervous that the branches “radius” will make it harder to fit as it grows. Any advice about taming the growth would be much appreciated. Thanks!
