I’m growing both tomatoes and zucchini in a raised garden bed. The advice from Planta is that these should be fertilized once a month in July. whereas lots of advice on the internet and what’s written in the instructions for Jack’s blossom booster says these plants should be fertilized every 1-2 weeks Can someone explain why it’s so different? And what would make these plants need more fertilizer vs is it going to burn my plants if I do it too often? Thank you!
So, I'm not certain this is what's going on, but vegetable and flower fertilizers tend to have different ratios of macronutrients N, P, & K (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) and different application schedules that depend on what we want from the plant (blooming vs fruiting require different internal chemistry for the plant). On top of that, fertilizing a potted plant in media vs a garden plant in soil -- those are two very different scenarios in terms of fertility and nutrient storage and cycling (there are different microbial communities, and gardens have types of critters that pots and indoor pots usually don't). I fertilize tomatoes about once a month, but with an organic slower-release fertilizer that I have to incorporate into the soil. Meanwhile, my indoor plants get dilute synthetic fertilizer more frequently. As long as you're following the directions on the product you're using, you should be ok!
