Hello everyone! I joined this group to see if I could find someone that knows about roses and planting them and what to use and what not to use. So if anybody has some ideas or positive or negative things to say about roses, please let me know. I I want to make sure that I have planted them right and have watered them right and what else I need to do. Thank you! Looking forward to hearing from y’all.
Roses love drainage and nutrient rich soil! So if they’re in the ground I would mix in some compost for them or worm castings. Make sure it’s quick draining but holds moisture. Water deeply but not everyday unless there’s high heat. I would consider planting some companion plants near them to help with pests because they’re prone to aphids. Marigolds and Nasturtiums are pretty blooms that work great for deterring pests— other options are Lavender, Alliums or Mint (make sure mint stays in a container so it won’t overtake your garden). Depending on the size, spring is the time to deadhead branches for optimal growth; there are some great guides online. Do what you can to bring ladybugs into your yard and they’ll protect your roses for you! I hope you have wonderful blooms <3

1 me gustaIdk if you've planted them yet, but when putting roses in the ground, you soak the roots for like a day to help make them flexible and wake the plant from bareroot dormancy. Help the roots spread outwards when putting them in soil. Planting depth varies by how harsh a winter you get; in places with colder winters you'd partially bury the graft point to help protect it. Roses like lots of air flow around/through their branches, so keep that in mind when pruning and placing nearby plants. Roses appreciate regular pruning (usually once in spring, once in summer, and once in fall to prep it for winter). I second the ladybug suggestion; they're great for clearing out aphids. Mantises are also good. Roses can be a bit weak to disease, so clear out any dead leaves/branches/flowers and always sterilize your pruners before cutting them
