I planted about 6 peony in late spring and the tallest one has only grown 5-6" high. I'm being asked to cut back a third, but that would leave just a stem. Don't know what to do.

    This is your peony correct? Usually when the first or second hard frost comes it kills the whole plant For winter I just let my peony die on its own but dead head the top so the stems and leaves get the photosynthesis. Then after the stems are dead or looking soggy and lifeless just cut the whole plant to the ground and mulch it with bark chips, leaves, grass clipping basically whatever you prefer. Then beginning of spring give it a little fertilizer when you see a little growth and they will regrow completely back. I also love to sprinkle my used coffee grounds around my peony all season long even when they are dormant. They thrive from acidic soil. So don’t be scared to cut your peony to the ground even now if there is not much green left they will come back stronger next spring taller and stronger. But if you can wait till your first frost to cut them down that would be even more better because they will get more energy to the bulb.
