Saved a bee today! This guy was so thirsty he ran right through my hose. I quickly threw together a bee bowl with some rocks, flowers and sugar water. He drank up and then boarded a leaf and let me carry him to the sunshine to dry off his wings. Flew off looking brand new after a while! It’s the little things while gardening sometimes. I love our pollinator friends, going to get some permanent bee bowls for the yard because they’re visiting so much lately 🐝

How much water goes in a bee bowl? I might try one this summer.

Any shallow bowl with a little water and some pebbles will work. It should not be deep.
3 likes If the honey bees are coming for water, other critters like butterflies and birds might be thirsty too. It really great when wildlife find a sanctuary in your garden 😍🌸🌺🌻
4 likes The only concern I habe is standing water breeding mosquitoes. I am in Central Florida. Standing water is frowned upon for those reasons. I planted flowers this year to attract the pollinators. Also was strategic about planting my basil because I hear the bugs we dont want dont like basil...and lemon Balm, which I also planted. I have other bug haters I am planting as well.
2 likes The bad bugs have stayed away from my oregano and green onions. If you let them bloom the flowers are really interesting. The pollinators really liked the green onion flowers
2 likes If skeeters are bad then a bee or bird bath is probably not a good idea unless you can keep the water moving, like a little fountain?
2 likesIf you want to help pollinators without pools of water, you can make a butterfly puddling station (add wet limestone, composty mud, stuff rich in minerals) or overripe (not yet rotten) fruit. Other than that, just offer plenty of nectar flowers in a variety of shapes/colors, and host plants for butterfly and moth caterpillars
