I’m new to outdoor gardening, and my townhouse development has really awful soil quality in what they have already planted, so I’m planning on ripping all the soil out and planting something new. Does anyone have any soil brand recommendations other than miracle grow? I live in a pretty humid part of PA, and it’s killed anything I’ve ever planted with it within 2 weeks, so I can’t trust it. Any recommendations for flowers to plant in the spring or fall in a 7A zone that can tolerate the cold and snow, and full sun would be very greatly appreciated as well. Thanks in advance! 😊

    The development also seems to really want anything I try to plant to die, because there’s cement 8 in under the mulch, so I’ve gotta plant shallow stuff. I’m happy to report that my neighbors have silently rebelled against the HOA claiming we can’t plant anything. They’ve gotten boxes above ground, paid for landscapers to dig up the ground on the sides of the house where they didn’t put the cement, you name it. Completely understand if this makes it really tough to recommend anything, but if anyone likes a challenge, please know you’re helping me and my neighbors fight a silly HOA that’s been destroying the natural biodiversity of the area and replacing everything with toxic plants in a neighborhood that over half of the homes have at least one dog and plants that any landscaper should know will not survive in the places they’re planting them.

    You can check with your local garden center, but raised beds are easier than trying to fix bad soil. Just use a good organic raised bed mix, or even potting soil if your garden center doesn't have raised bed mix. Costco has big bags in early spring that are priced well, but sell out pretty quick!

      Thanks! I ended up doing that, actually. Got some mature lily bulbs that have already bloomed before and with a much more developed root system. Looking forward to seeing them bloom in the spring 😊
