My wild roses 🌹 Now that I’ve been able to get some plants routinely thriving indoors and on my patio for the past year I’m starting to feel confident 😳 the woman who owned my home for years with her family before us was an avid gardener. I have her rose bushes still on the side of my home. And I don’t do anything to them. Nothing. Well I bought myself a pair of rose pruning gloves and shears to prune bushes and pruned away this morning. Not sure if I pruned enough. Also there is one really long branch where the leaves are shaped weird and not like a rose. I can see she is sick so I tried to cut the dead and sick pieces away. What else can I do to help her? Granted it’s about to be fall and she will hibernate over the winter but I would like to set her up to bloom next year. Thanks for any advice you can share. 💚💚💚

    Always sterilize your pruners with roses; it helps prevent diseases. To prune them, remove all dead and sick material first (tbh I'd re-sterilize the trimmers after dealing with any sick branches.) Next remove any old branches (grey/woody sections don't bloom well) and any branches that are thinner than a pencil. Cut back long/tall growth by about a third of their length to maintain shape. With any braches that cross/rub each other, trim one off to prevent rubbing. Next prune for shape (you want a V shape overall, and to keep good air flow through the branches). If you prune now, you should be good, but avoid pruning too late in fall. Pruning stimulates growth, and you don't want young growth to get hit by a hard frost

      As for whatever's messing with the leaves, the cut holes are some kind of pest, probably sawfly larvae. The weird curled leaves don't match any disease I know of

      I just Googled it and I think it might be rose rosette disease. Have you heard of that. All of the tiny rosettes that were on it had died. It hasn’t bloomed this summer that I can remember. I’m wondering if I will need to prune the whole thing back completely

      It does look similar to rosette disease, but from your photos I can't be certain. If it's doing dwarf "witches broom" type growth with lots of thorns close to each other, that'd be it for sure. If you're sure it's rosette disease, then that's fatal for roses and can spread, so the best way to deal with it is to remove the affected rose. It can also help to remove any fully wild roses that grow as weeds nearby
