Hello everyone! I bought my first house so it’ll be my first time starting a garden. I want to do all the things! I just cleared out this little patch I have in my front yard today, so the imagine the picture without the bushes. What plants should I use? I want colorful flowers and I want to keep mosquitoes away. Also, while clearing out the area I found so many pests. What are some good pesticides that are safe for the garden?

Wow Congrats!! We use “pestie” it’s an affordable pest control service that you spray yourself, and you can make it suitable for your needs (pet friendly etc.)

Yayyy!!! Building a relationship with your own land is SO magical. Congrats!! I’m also experimenting with some bug repelling plants this year: - Calendula are starting off strong and smelling great! - My lavender is mad at me for putting it in nice soil; I’m about to start again with a pot of rocky low-nutrient mix that I know it will adapt to better - marigolds have just germinated; they did great last year! - lemon bergamot is in seedling stage Haven’t tried yet but are on my list for more mosquito repelling plants to try: - American Beautyberry - Citronella - Lemongrass And then there’s also the strategy of planting plants that attract more dragonflies to eat the mosquitoes, which is why I planted tons of black-eyed susans last year, which have done super well and are about to flower again now. Im adding Yarrow for the dragonflies this year. I’m in 8a with heavy clay soil. Best of luck experimenting with what’s best for you and your home!!
