I’ll be planting some asiatic lily bulbs in an above-ground garden bed this week, but I’m trying to figure out what type of soil to pick up to plant them. They’re mature bulbs that have bloomed before, and I’ve read that these lilies like sandy, loose, or loamy soil. When I was trying to look up soil brands, I got a mix between recommendations for indoor potting mix and garden soil, so I’m a little worried about getting the wrong type of soil for these guys. Does anyone have any brand recommendations, or know if I should go for garden soil or indoor potting mix for these beds? TIA for any help 😊

    I’ve never been steered wrong planting my plants in a mixture of Fox Farm Ocean Forest potting soil, organic chunky perlite, and Black Gold Orchid Mix! I’ve also heard good things about Fox Farm Happy Frog soil. Not sure how big your garden beds are; but lilies do prefer a well draining soil that’s slightly acidic. So something nutrient rich with extra drainage/aeration, whether that’s perlite, bark or both, would be my recommendation 🙏🏼

      Thanks! I’ve been meaning to try their soil. So I can use a potting mix for outdoor plants, then? My beds are gonna be about 3 feet by 1 foot, then 10 inches high. I just wanna make sure whatever I pick is gonna keep the bulbs safe but not too wet, since my area recently changed to zone 7A, since we’ve got cold winters but less snow these days, then really humid summers.

      Yes; however, depending on how big the beds are— you should probably mix it with top soil and garden soil or all purpose soil. Upon a quick google search, people have had positive experiences using Kellogg Raised Bed and Potting mix which would eliminate all worries if you’re stressed about getting the wrong ratio!

      I would definitely use fox farm as the base. Add a bag of vermiculite too for that sandy quality

    Everyone has different opinions on the “perfect mix” and granted I’m in California so the weather stays pretty consistent here. I would say the biggest thing is making sure the soil isn’t too compacted and mixing a few different things for drainage and a nutrient rich growing medium that will last several seasons. Some people mention using compost; a soil recipe called Mel’s Mix is mentioned on several forums for outdoor beds that you could google.

      Thanks for the in depth answers! I’ve got a bag of Scott’s Top Soil left that I can mix with a potting mix. I’ve given it a PH test and it came out as slightly acidic, but I haven’t seen the best reviews on it, so I was scared to try it out. Kellogg’s doesn’t look to be available where I live, but there’s a Whitney Farms Raised Bed mix at my Ace Hardware I could try. Thanks for all the help!
