POT SIZING HELP NEEDED!! My tangerine tree is currently in a 14” pot and needs to be repotted into a larger one. I’ve read that repotting into something “too big” is a bad idea. What size pot should I purchase?

I’d like to be able to move it indoors during the winter. My area gets below the cold hardy temps rated for citrus, and we experience about 2 months of pretty cold weather. Would it be better in the ground? I’ve just always heard citrus trees were very sensitive to the cold.

I believe that there is a way to keep frost off them in the winters. I’ve seen sprinklers on at night even in Florida. It gets cold there in winter too in the northern part where I lived. You can keep doing what you’re doing until the tree gets huge. Or build a big greenhouse! Ha, ha! That’s what king Louis the14th did.

I’m in north Florida! Sounds like you’re familiar with the weather here! As you know, we don’t get all that much cold weather, but when we do, it gets COLD! I’m not sure how old my tree is currently, but I’d like to keep it in a pot at least through this winter to give it a good chance at survival. I’ll plant in ground next spring!

Koval gardeningFor trees, a big pot should be fine just be careful of the watering. Make sure it completely dries out before watering due to root rot. My citrus fruit trees are planted in huge pots and I bring them indoors because I live in Oregon. I just really really pay attention to watering and over the years once the tree is established it should be no problem.
