Are these dead? Last summer I planted several new plants in my front yard garden. I live in Toronto, zone 7a. While the winters are getting warmer, we had a couple of old spells this season with temperatures going below -20C and even getting to -30C for a few days. Most of the plants I planted (and the bulbs as well) are showing spring growth (e.g., lilies, crocuses, hostas, tulips, cardonna). But the miniature roses, hibiscus, and coneflowers look dead to me. They were covered with a thick layer of mulch and I followed the suggested winter care but it doesn’t look good to me. Any suggestions? I fertilized the roses this week (plus I added slow fertilizer at the end of the season) and everything is getting enough sun and water. Do I need to be more patient, or are these a lost cause? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

  1. Summer

No, I’m zone 5b & still haven’t seen any growth from either my hardy hibiscus or foxgloves. Coneflowers should be showing foliage soon, roses around the same time (good luck with the mini-rose! I killed mine. 😞) & just be patient. What you’ve seen are spring bloomers & the 3 you mention are summer bloomers. 😜

I’m in So Dak and thought I lost 5 plants but I only lost two. Some were just slower to pop up through the mulch. In fact I was cutting one down to prepare to dig it out when I bumped the mulch and saw the green leaves underneath!
