Iā€™m in zone 7b and would love to try out growing wildflowers this year for cutting for indoor vases (probably zinnias). I finally have an East facing front porch but me and container planting usually donā€™t do too well lol (but it was tomatoes and last summer was a bad season). My question is what 1) what is your favorite material for a wildflower container? 2) should I leave the container in a sunny spot at all times (east facing)? 3) best suggested soil for wildflowers? 4) when are other 7b folks planning to start seeds outdoors? Our ā€œlast frostā€ date in this area can be tricky!

    I donā€™t really have any good suggestions but Iā€™m also in 7b zone. I usually donā€™t plant anything outside until frost is done even though that is tricky to predict in our zone. I did Zinnias last year and they grew like CRAZY, but I was late getting them in the ground well after frost danger had passed. I did nothing special to the soil just used what I had on hand regular gardening soil. No compost or anything like that. They were taking over my mail box by the time I pulled them.

    Forgot to mention they were definitely in a sunny area direct sun, not East facing (I usually just plant things and see what happens little planning on placement such as direction), I usually just go by plant date on packet for the region and keep an eye on the weather forecast for best results. Hope this helps a little.

    I love to plant zinnias! They are easy to grow in this zone. They like the ground better than containers but if you must use containers, make sure your zinniaā€˜s are short. 3 foot tall zinnias donā€™t do well in a container unless itā€™s huge!
