When it comes to rose bushes or roses in general. When removing the dead leaves and old flowers, should I remove/cut off the old dead wood that's not producing anything? I know I should remove the dead stuff away from the plant on the ground but just wondering about the dead wood part. Also can I do now, mid spring? Zone 6b MI

1 gillaYou can prune dead material at any time (it doesn't care; it's dead.) For pruning live parts, you can do that any time when it'll have adequate time (2-3 weeks) to heal before getting a hard frost. So in general you'd prune once in the spring to clear away what died in winter, once for deadheading in summer, and once in early fall to prepare it for winter. When pruning live branches, remember to sterilize your trimmers as roses are a bit vulnerable to diseases
