TIPS anybody?! I need to move this rose bush to the front of the yard. It was planted already when we moved here, but the placement is proving inconvenient by the driveway and walk-path. There are branches that are completely brown and have no flowers. Do I cut those off? It is nice when it blooms. We haven’t done anything but trim the edge bc, THORNS lol but it keeps blooming, I wouldn’t wanna just gut it and trash it :(
Wow, that's a big one. I suggest giving it a serious prune first to help reduce its weight for moving it. To prune, sterilize your trimmers (wipe them with isopropyl alcohol). First remove all dead material (and anything that looks diseased). Remove any suckers (abnormally vigorous growth, tends to go straight up.) Then prune away extra branches for shape (you want the overall shape to be an upward V, with branches going outwards. Roses like to have airflow between their branches, so trim to open up the middle as well.) Always place your cuts right after nodes so the section of stem that dies back will be short. New growth will be in the direction nodes are facing, so you can strategically choose nodes to encourage a good shape as it grows back.
4 gillningarOn average, it's a good practice to never prune away more than 1/3rd of the branches to avoid stressing the plant, but roses are very prune-happy. Don't worry about trimming too much; it'll be fine. Once it's downsized to your liking, dig up the roots. Roses go down about 2 feet deep, and spread maybe a foot away from the main base. You can leave the soil on and just fluff it at the edges. When replanting, choose a full sun location that gets good air flow. Rough up the edges of the hole you dig for it; compacted dirt can act like a wall and cause issues. Water it in when you plant it and water it regularly for a few moths as it gets re-established. To help keep it looking its best, prune it regularly (once in early fall to prep it for winter dormancy, once in spring, and as needed in summer to harvest blooms as cut flowers or remove spent blooms)
