Hi Gardener Friends, What would you do with this strip of ground next to my driveway? Grass is growing around river stone, which is on top of landscape fabric. This is how it was when I bought the house. At first I just cleared all the plants and left the stone, but I found this uncomfortable to walk on (as you can see our driveway is quite narrow). I’ve planted some stuff that’s recommended for rocky areas (sedum, cat mint, oregano, thyme…). But there’s still a lot of grass, and my husband refuses to mow or weed whack it. I could really use a plan that is not labor intensive and will be easy to maintain. Thank you for your help!

    How much sun/shade does it get and what zone are you in?

      It’s on the southeast side of the house. It gets part sun. I’m in zone 7A.

    So my “low maintenance” suggestion for an area that gets partial sun would be to remove all the grass (you might consider putting down landscaping cloth to help prevent future weeds). Then put in something like hosta and/hellebores. I have a shade garden on the south east side of my home that is nearly maintenance free. Put the plants in, mulch around them and make sure they are adequately watered and you should be good to go. Hostas dies off in winter but return every spring. Hellebore (Lenten rose) is evergreen that blooms late winter early spring so beds won’t be bare in winter.

    This is what our southeast bed looks like. We have 8 varieties of hosta (everything from variegated, to Giant Blues, to mouse ears) so there is lots of variety even within the same type of plant.

    I would like to have this area planted, but there are river stones under the existing landscape fabric. They go deep.

      So the river rock is on top of the landscape cloth or beneath it? Your original post indicated the cloth was under the stones but your last post stated the stones are under the cloth.

      It’s both. I don’t know how far down the river stone goes.
