I started this Beefsteak tomato plant indoors, and in about a week or so, I will planting it outside in my garden bed. Do I just just the entire cup, remove the soil at a whole, and plant it directly in the garden bed OR do i have to separate the stems and only plant one or two in the garden be? This is my first year as a plant mom, so I’m not that knowledgeable yet. Any advice helps!!!

How many seeds did you plant? I would very carefully put that in a slightly bigger pot without messing with the roots. You need to wait to transplant it until it has about 3 or 4 sets of “true leaves” and are about 5-8 inches tall. When you reach that point, I would simply snip the other plants to the soil so that the “strongest plant” survives but again, do not mess with the root system. When it’s finally time to plant in ground, remove leaves and bury the tomato plant up the stem in soil to encourage a huge root system to grow. Crazy enough, learned the soil burying trick from Zach Galifianakis’s gardening show on Netflix— but it seems to work!

ahhh thank you for sharing!! i probably planted 5-6 seeds per cup (i am now understanding that is a lot). Just to be sure, are you saying i should cut all but one when i transplant it outside or should i do it now?

I would say snip when they’re about 3-4 inches tall and have 1 or two sets of “true leaves” that way you know which plant seems the strongest and want to keep. Snip the others to the soil level.
