Hi Garden Growers, How bad of an idea is it to plant ivy in my yard? I have these two pretty variegated varieties that I’ve been keeping as houseplants, but thought they might be nice to fill in some spaces outside. Maybe to cover up the ugly sewer access pipes, or to climb up my decorative old chair. I know ivy can take over easily. What’s been your experience with outdoor ivy?
My mother tried but was never successful. There are parts of my city that are absolutely covered in it though from people doing that, and it grows (last I heard) 6-8 inches per day depending on what you’re planting. As long as it’s in a safe space where it’ll be maintained for its lifetime, I’d say go for it.

0 Likes I mean, it’s been there for decades, if not a century, so it’s VERY well established, but it just goes to show that it can stick around that long 😂😂

0 Likes there are different patches that stretch for miles because they have direct sunlight all the time. but again, if you’re willing to keep up with it you’ll be fine!
