I have 2 empty garden boxes. I live in an area where it gets up to around 100° or so in the summer, and can get as cold as 30° give or take in the winter. Also we are in drought sometimes and in the winter can get a bit of frost. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to try some vegetables in these boxes and if so, which ones. Also, any tips on planting and caring for said vegetables would be awesome.

Given the conditions, consider adding a pergola to provide some shade on hot, sunny days. Throw a tarp over the pergola on colder days.

If I pergola or an awning isn’t a possibility, but I do get shade, is that sufficient or do you have different advice?

If there is some shade, then a pergola is not necessary. But to protect from cold, something temporary with a tarp would be helpful.

To prevent damage from frost you could place a plastic sheet over the plants, and assuming there’s no water restrictions make sure to water them plentyyyyyy, like frequently throughout the week, until it’s no longer excessively hot.
