    I’ve seen images/videos of them eating stems. It would be my best guess. Of course, I am no tomato hornworm-ologist

    I’ve never had a problem with tomato hornworms this early in the season, but june bug grubs have done that to my radishes before. Dig around the dirt right there and see if there is one hiding.
