I’m in Tucson and I’m just learning. My husband made me this set up! It was originally against the wall to the right but my plants in the bed were getting fried. Now I placed them against this fence. I am facing west in this picture. Is this a bad spot?🥺 I have Zucchini, Crookneck Squash, Broccoli, and in the bed there’s 2 bell pepper plants and 2 strawberry plants. I panicked because I saw my leaves in the broccoli and squash look sad (I’m not typically home during this time of day). I watered the squash because I didn’t last night, but it was high noon, did I mess them up?😱 I moved my broccoli into the shade casted by the bed.

    How many hours of sun a day is the box getting now? Very beautiful box! You have a sweet husband to build that for you! Keep in mind that the shallowness of that type of raised bed does cause the soil to dry out faster. So you may find yourself having to water more frequently!

      Hi Celesta! Thank you! Right now, I think daylight is about 10 hours? I would say it gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Indirect, because of shade, at least 3 or 4. My strawberry plant for fried one day so I decided to rotate it. It now gets less direct light than before because of my neighbors palm tree

      Hmm! 6 hrs should be enough, though that's at the low end of their full sun requirements. He's a cute little guy btw! I love strawberry plants. 🤩

    Less sun isn't typically the answer for these plants. It's usually just more water 🤓

      Okay, I'm going to share my two sense--take it or leave it. 😆 I really do think it's a lack of water issue. Based off the soil in the picture of your strawberry you shared above, that dirt is bone dry. Crop plants (especially berries!) like to be kept moist. My strawberry box only ever dries out on the top 1/2 in. - 1 in. (if I stick my finger in the soil even in the dead of summer, it's damp underneath). I think the shallowness of your cute garden box is the culprit, as it's letting the soil dry out much faster. 🥺 But there is hope! I would look into getting a simple drip watering system with a timer so that it can go off 2x a day (watering by hand yourself twice a day isn't practical with work schedules etc.). In the meantime, I would at least double the amount of water you are giving them in your watering session. And watering in the morning as opposed to night would help as well. Less chance of pest & fungus problems that way too. But the main point of watering in the morning is so that the soil is actually wet when the sun comes out. If their roots are cool, these plants can survive whatever amount of direct sunlight! I hope this helps. ☀️

    Gardening in Southern Arizona is challenging. I think you’re doing the right thing by adjusting to the sunlight. It will take some trial and error but completely doable.
