Hey guys! First time grower, unless you count growing grass in elementary school. I’ve recently germinated some tomato seeds (Beefsteak and Italian Roma), and was wondering mainly what size pot I would need for both plants in a few weeks for transplant, as I rent and don’t have the rights to make a whole garden bed. I’ve seen some results say 8”/8”, some say 12”/12” some say 16”/16” so I just don’t really know which is best.
I grew both of these varieties last year in a self watering grow pot (12 x 28). You *can* get away with a 12 x 12 pot, just know that they grow tall. (Both of mine hit over 8 feet!) You definitely want something to help brace them in a pot that size otherwise even the slightest breeze will tip them. I would recommend 16 x 16 and some kind of stabilizing cages simple due to the size the grow to be. The photo is my big boy the end of July and I didn’t get them planted until late May so this was less than 60 days of growth.

Some people use 5 gallon buckets. The big box hardware stores usually have food safe buckets.
