Hi plant friends! I saved this plant from Lowe’s clearance, and saw that LECA is one of the recommended soil mediums that it can grow in. I decided to try something new, but wondering if anyone has any tips for me? Usually I’ve propagated in LECA, but never really grown a full plant in this medium. The LECA is used, and I filled it with water about halfway. I know first time LECA you cover with water, then next waterings are only half-filled. This was the amount of LECA it took to keep the plant sturdy. Any recommendations, tips, advice, corrections, concerns I should know about to help this plant thrive? I’ll take any and all suggestions. TIA!

    If it hasnt been grown in water prior to this, it will need to go through a transition phase to grow a different set of roots (“water roots” vs soil roots). The transition phase is different than the maintenance phase for leca and takes a close eye on the moisture balance. Check out a youtube video on it!

    I looked up some videos and I didn’t really see videos about water roots vs soil roots. All the videos had good transitions of doing what I did and rinsing off the soil and planting into LECA. One video did show cutting/trimming the roots to allow for them to grow longer in the LECA.

    I have a limelight dracaena in leca. Same as you, I didn't do anything special with the transition other than cleaned and trimmed the roots. It adjusted quickly. My only advice, since it looks to be a closed set-up, which mine is too. For the next few weeks do a couple of total water rinses/flushes, like would do with water propagation. Fill the jar up with water and then drain it all out, repeat 2-3 times, then replace with fresh water just below the roots. Don't shake, be gentle - the leca will shift around and you don't want the roots disturbed too much. The flush helps to remove any shedded older roots. Your plant will also appreciate the fresh water. After this I usually continue doing the rinse once a month. The leca allows air pockets, but the water is still basically stagnant, even with a few "top-offs", but a total water replace helps control algae too. Oh, and your plant looks great!
