Hi there! Sorry for the lengthy message. I switched a dieffenbachia into leca. It was declining and I found thrips on it. So, I rinsed it, did a total re-do/prop with a few of its healthier stems. Treated it with neem a couple of times. It bounced back. Then awhile later I found another thrip on it. This time I decided to use insectidal soap for a couple of weeks. Thought things were under control. Everything was fine for a few weeks, now, I found another couple of thrips...I've had it set away from any other plants. I don't know where they're coming from. None of my other plants have thrips, I have been beyond paranoid and I've been very watchful. I thought semi-hydro was going to help control pests. Any advice?

    In general semi hydro can help control pests like fungus gnats; however, it won’t really help to get rid of thrips because they get in the leaves and roots. They are incredibly hard to get rid of because they lay their eggs in the plant tissue so topical sprays like neem and insecticidal soap will help but only temporarily. I have found the best success treating thrips with Captain Jacks Dead Bug Brew. It contains spinosad which is very effective against thrips. I would give your plant (and any near it) a spa day and sit it under the shower for a bit to rinse the leaves. Then give it a good spray (leca included just in case) with the captain jacks and let that dry on the leaves before you move it back into light to prevent any burns. You’ll want to do this every four or five days (the average length of the egg cycle) for about three to four rounds and that should do the trick!

    I had my first experience with thrips this past fall when I bought a plant that had some on it and it infected half my collection 😭 I waged a war against them before I found something that worked for me so I hope this works for you!

    I would recommend either washing the pecs extremely well or getting new leca then washing all the roots clean and make sure to throughly wash every leaf and the undersides and remove every tripe. Then I would plant back in leca and move it to a spot you are sure no bugs are in and no other plants. I hope this helps!!!

    I’m paranoid about bugs— borderline phobia level. Here’s the thing: Once you get a couple thrips, they are going to infest. They lay their eggs inside of leaf tissue, so no spray will help because it has to make contact and the bug is protected by the leaf until it hatches. Therefore, everything you’ve done at this point has only killed adults, but hasn’t done anything for the next generation whic emerge after 2-3 weeks. I like to use Systemic Houseplant Granules — they are a lifesaver! It takes about a month for all plant tissue to soak it up. But once the plant’s fully protected, you only need to sprinkle and water in a tsp of granules once a month! It’ll take a bit, but get some systematic house plant granules and use them. Continue to treat with insecticidal soap spray as often as you can for the next several weeks, and within about a month you won’t see as many thrips because the granules will slowly eradicate the problem. As it starts kicking in, there will be less adult thrips surviving to lay eggs, then less eggs, then no eggs, and then no adults. Continue with regular care and maintenance from there.
