For those of you who soak your LECA in boiling water so it can be reused, how long do you soak it for?

    I usually boil mine for 10 minutes and then just let it cool on the stove. While boiling though I check to see if anything is floating on the top and scrape it our with a fork or spoon. I don't try to get it super clean though, it's really to kill any bacteria it may have. Any other debris should be broken down with the root inoculate I use in my nutrient water.

      IFM, could you tell me what is the name of the root inoculant you use, and why you are using it? Also, what all do you put in your nutrient water? I’m just getting started changing some of my plants over to pon, and would really appreciate any advice you might have. TIA!

      On YouTube, look up Knot Dudes. His video "How I Make My Nutrient Solution for LECA | What I Use for my Passive Hydro Nutrients". I make my nutrient water just like that. He explains everything in the video like what to use and how it works. I've been using semi hydro for about 8 months now and everything is doing great.

    Can isopropyl alcohol work? Instead of boiling water

      I believe it would, but you would have to make sure it's completely rinsed clean before putting your plant in it. The alcohol could burn the roots. You can also use hydrogen peroxide. But, sometimes I don't even clean my Leca or pon when I'm re potting, especially if it's the same plant. If I know there was no root rot, I'll just use the substrate again without cleaning. Like I mentioned in the other comment, I use a root inoculate so that should take care of any material left behind. It is a gamble, but it's been working for me, so far 🤞🏽🤣

    I boil for 10 mins everytime I need to change it, I soak in tap water for at least 24 hours before using and I use distilled water with superthrive

    I bring to the boil and let it boil for 10 minutes and then cool on the stove. Once it’s cooled down, I transfer to a tub and let it soak for at least 24 hours in a lazy nutrient solution (tap water with nutrient solution suitable for cuttings).
