Ok so. my question is: can plants grow in water forever, or do they need to be inevitably planted in soil at some point so they don’t die? This guy has been in water for about a year. one thing i notice is that the roots (or rather, root) doesn’t have any offshoots and is one long tendril. maybe that’s normal for this type of plant, but there are nodes where i’d assume more roots could grow. after a while, it also stopped growing and it is becoming very sensitive to the conditions it’s in, even though it used to be very complacent with anything. i just don’t have a lot of pots, and tbh i kinda like looking at the roots in the water lol so if given the option id lean towards keeping it in water. but should i pot it or can i let it stay in the water?

Yes, most plants can live forever in water (some can’t though, so just check your plant). BUT you have to add fertilizer to the water once its got a root system. Water alone will not sustain the plant for ever. Look into hydroponic fertilizer, or use an EXTREMELY diluted fertilizer when you change the water.
