For backstory, I was gifted over 100 plants one night. It was a long night. This guy really needed some love and I am so proud of him! Next, the hard part, I’m not familiar with hydroponics but some of the gifted plants are well established hydro plants. What is my best way to transplant this dude once I’ve established a more solid root system? I’m upgrading his glass jar to a larger one tomorrow and continuing to keep him in water. What are those little balls called? Do I need moss? What do I do or need or look for and where is the best place to buy it (I live in Toronto so fellow Canadians let me know) because I try to be budget friendly. Everything I have is in soil but the hydroponics plants are so much healthier and easier to take care of!!

    the little ones are stratum if black, perlite if white. the brown/beige ones are leca. to use moss or not to use moss is up to you, i personally do not like it as substrate for an established plant, but if you have some that are already in moss it's hell to get it all off. not canadian so i'm not sure about physical locations but amazon has some good bulk deals that float around the 15-20 CAD range. for transplanting, just make sure the medium is moist for a few days and then ease off into a normal watering schedule.

      i prefer soil for my plants. if you want to do soil for him, i would go with a chunky-er mix but not super chunky, potting soil with perlite and bark, and some coco chips. for semi-hydro, i hear really good things about leca with philos. the only thing with leca is that you need to "wash" them, just soak in water for a couple minutes and then dump the water. DON'T put it in your drains, dump it outside, the dust will clog your drains if you pour enough of it in there

    When you go to transplant, regardless of if you choose to do leca for a hydro setup, moss and leca for a semi hydro, or a more soil based approach, you want to wait until the roots that grow have their own secondary root system growing from those. These second roots are the ones responsible for water and nutrient uptake, not the thicker first roots to shoot out. If you use leca, WEAR A MASK for your safety when you rinse it! Rinse it outside over the dirt or grass, it destroys and clogs drains if you do it inside. If you do perlite, same thing, mask and rinse it off outside! Gotta stay safe. You don’t need to plant it in leca or moss. Once it grows roots it would do best in a chunky mix of organic soil, coco coir/orchid bark, any kind of pumice/lava rock that’s crushed small enough, and perlite. It may also eventually need a growth support to climb against

    I have several plants in leca. Your plant is off to an easy start because it’s never been in soil. Leca needs to soak in water about 24 hours or more before you can use it. You also need fertilizer for semi hydro. It will say on the label. Leca needs to be rinsed every month or so to rinse off any mineral build up. I get my semi hydro planters from a Canadian company called Wavyleaf. They have the best designed planters for semi hydro. The planter water should be dumped and replaced about every month or so. Also if you decide to keep the plants in clear glass containers, you will have an algae issue within a few days probably. The pic is of some of my Wavyleaf planters. Big advantage of semi is that watering tasks are cut way back. Maybe every couple weeks. Depends on plant. Check out the Leca Queen on YouTube for more info.
