My first hydro! Bought this Monstera today and it was begging to be repotted, roots growing from the bottom of the plastic pot, barely any soil left, I had to cut the plastic pot open it was so stuck with so many roots. I cleaned the roots removed a few and left all the big ones and some smaller ones. The plant looks so good I hope it doesn’t feel the transition too much! I added leca to the bottom of the glass cuz I only had a few left and then tao water. Now I am reading on this group about all there water solutions and Im unsure whag to do or where to start? I want to make sure shes happy and I dont ruin it .. it’s my first Monstera and I always wanted to have one! 🙏💛

    Congrats on your first monstera 😁 a few things I suggest: turning as many leaves to face the same direction as possible, face those leaves towards the window or else they’ll grow weird, and watering with a very diluted fertilizer solution (something I do with all my plants in LECA)

    Congratulations on your first monstera! A couple of tips! - I would remove the leca because it provides no benefit like this, and add a root promoting nutrient solution to the water. The plant can be kept like this for a while to grow water roots ready to be transplanted into leca in the future. Alternatively I would remove the water, and plant the monstera into the leca so the roots are all surrounded by it, and then only adding a little bit of water making sure it’s not touching any of the roots. Leca in semi hydro setups acts like a wick to pull moisture from water/nutrients to the roots, just being sat submerged in water like this it won’t do very much â˜ș

      Unless you guys think it’s best to leave in water first? If I leave it in water for a while and it grows water roots would it be ok to transfer to Leca after? How long do you recommend leaving it in water? Or is it ok to just plant in Leca the way u suggested now?

      Leaving it in water with a root promotion nutrient until it’s established water roots will make the transfer less traumatic for the plant. It’s okay to plant in leca straight away but the plant might take a bit longer to recover. Even if planting straight to leca I recommend using a root nutrient for the first few weeks instead of whatever else you’re planning on using long term.

    I switched my monstera to water a few months ago and it’s thriving! I agree with the others, the leca in this situation isn’t doing much. But this plant can be grown 100% in water. You just have to make sure you’re fertilizing with a diluted solution every time you change the water as these use quite a lot of nutrients. It will loose a lot of its current roots as they’re soil roots and its going to grow water roots, but thats totally normal.

      When they are in Leca do they use these soil roots or they will also need to grow water roots first? thanks!!
