Two of my favorite ferns - Microsorum musifolium 'Crocodyllus' aka “crocodile fern” and Davallia fejeensis aka “rabbit’s foot fern”. I wish I could have more ferns, but my humidity isn’t great most of the year, and I refuse to mist. These two, plus my crispy wave fern, are the only ones that I have been able to keep pretty lush and healthy even through the winter. Truth be told when I first got them it seemed like they stalled out and took FOREVER to acclimate and really start growing again, like maybe almost a year. I had to move them around a bit, but once I found the perfect spot with the right light… and supplemented with grow-lights in the winter, they really took off. Has anyone else been successful with ferns in lower humidity? And, if so, what kind?

      I have a humidifier in a different room of the house with other plants, but I don’t want them all over the house, (cause there are plants everywhere 🙃) and also that’s a lot of water to distill on my own or buy because my water is basically rocks and they get nasty quick. All that to say, to much maintenance to get more of them. I have considered grow cabinets, but a lot of my plants are quite large now and space is an issue. Kind of why I’ve given up on some types of plants, my conditions just aren’t suited for them. I just need my own conservatory…

    Can i ask why you refuse to mist? Because i mist almost all my plants (including some succulents which i really shoukdnt but its so fun!) thats why i ask lol Because to me misting is SO fun lol

      Misting doesn’t actually increase humidity and can lead to fungal infections

      Ah. Thank you i didnt know that abt the fungal infection stuff Maybe thats why my avocados kept dying lol. Ty for sharing

      I don’t believe misting is beneficial to many of the plants in my collection. Misting doesn’t increase humidity, it just gets the plants wet and it may increase the risk of bacterial and fungal infection, and attract pests. I’d rather not risk it. I do clean my plants when they get dusty every few months in the shower if the specific plant’s leaves can handle it.

      Do you think misting once per week is too frequent for foliage plants? I haven’t really had any issues with misting yet myself… Not that I can deduce. I also don’t like to use humidifiers because of the maintenance… Our water is super hard.

    I read recently from someone who believes in misting and they asked why misting would be bad? If plants get rained on in their natural habitat, then wouldn’t us misting them be copying that? Made sense to me but I’m glad to hear others opinions! lol

      I think the negatives have to do with over-misting and there not being sufficient airflow inside the home, like there is outside. From my understanding rain and any water on the leaves closes up the stomata which slows photosynthesis, which we don’t want happening constantly. While it might be fine with sufficient airflow, when comparing indoor plants to outside plants we houseplant people strive for perfect pristine leaves… leaves outside are largely not perfect and pristine, so to me it’s not an equal comparison.
