What types of fertilizer and soil enhancers do you recommend for highly variegated foliage plants? Picture of my Thai for reference, ty all!

    Iā€™ve heard variegated plants enjoy a bit of silica added to their fertiliser. Iā€™ve not tried it myself because Iā€™m not lucky enough to own a plant like this (yet), but might be worth a shot

      Yes šŸ‘ Iā€™ve been adding diatomaceous earth (food grade) on the tops of the soil, when watered in it adds silica. Itā€™s also a known pest control and retains moisture (this could be good or bad depending on your soil, plant, pot ect) Iā€™ve learned that silica helps with the absorption of nutrients by aiding the plants actual cell structure. Itā€™s actually good for all plants itā€™s just that variegated varieties donā€™t make as much chlorophyll so the extra silica helps where that is lackingā€¦ sry to ramble, Iā€™ve researched this too much lately šŸ¤“

      Thank you for the ramble! I just got some DE and was apprehensive about using it as a soil topper, afraid it would dry out the stemsā€¦ but if youā€™ve been doing it without problems, then Iā€™m good to go!

      Iā€™ve never used DE but Iā€™ve heard itā€™s good for pest control

      As long as youā€™re just using it in/on the soil itā€™s ok wouldnā€™t want to coat whole plants with it though.

      Iā€™m not using soil lol so I think Iā€™m good. If I ever had a massive spider mite infestation or something I couldnā€™t get rid of though Iā€™d try it

    As far as fertilizers go I like marine phytoplankton. MARPHYL is the brand I use. Iā€™ve also heard great things about GT foliage focus and got a bottle yesterday lol so weā€™ll see if itā€™s up to the hype.

      I used this one and my plants were happier when I used it. It just went to fast

      lol yeah Ive learned to use them sparingly. Did you mean the GT or Marphyl? I dilute mine a bit and use less often than recommended or with some plants only when I feel like it and others more often because theyā€™re special šŸ˜

      My understanding is that GT is pretty weak/diluted because of Australian regulations, which is also why people there canā€™t often access the brands people in the states recommend. I use superthrive (formerly dyna gro) foliage pro and my plants seem to like it

      Iā€™ve heard superthrive is good stuff too. Does it list any nutritional information? Iā€™ve worked at a garden retailer and have learned to check the labels! But ST doesnā€™t seem to list this.
