Hello all! My Ficus Lyrata / Fiddle leaf fig is becoming big/tall (too big). I know it means it’s happy, but I dont have the space for it to grow more. Any tips on how to manage it’s size? Also, the trunk is quite skinny and the leaf pattern makes it really hard to add support so it doesnt tip over. Any recommandations on how to help it grow a thicker trunk? Thanks ☺️🌿

I’ve seen that you can just cut it off at the trunk, propagate that piece, and it will start growing new leaves from the top. You can also look up a video of how to encourage new growth points on the trunk and help encourage it to branch out more. I don’t personally have one, but I love watching YouTube videos on plants I plan to get 😂

I know, I’ve seen that too. The thing is that its a ‘’rescue’’ plant, that’s why there’s no leaves at the bottom (they all died while with it’s previous owner). And the trunk is skinny because it wasnt cared for properly. From what I’ve read you can chop it down, with I dont have the guts to do. Or has you said, make little incision on the trunk to help it grown new points, but I feel like it already has a really hard time supporting the weight that if I chip the trunk it’s going to break 🤦🏼‍♀️

I would recommend trimming the top off and style it as a tree shape. You can slowly remove a leaf at a time (one every few weeks or so) and will be able to then stake the trunk for support. Photo below for reference ☺️

I’d trim the top as well! It’ll grow back and branch out :)

I hear that grabbing the trunk and shaking it helps with making it thicker since it mimics wind/natural conditions!

Mine has red spots now and also a yellow leaf. Too much water or it enough and I know I need to repot it and maybe trim the tops?
