hey there, i’ve just got this calathea orbifolia from the grocery store and it’s been wilting and getting crispy on the edges despite the soil being moist and being located in my humid room (minimum 50% humidity, sometimes as high as 70%). i’m wondering if perhaps it has been overwatered or worse, the roots are rotten. the newest leaf is pictured below, it just started shriveling yesterday.

I would check the roots as a start.

i have, forgot to mention in the original post that all the roots i can see look relatively healthy, if a little sickly. my concern is the roots in the middle since it is planted in a peat-based mixture + has dried out very little in the week it’s been home

Calatheas can be finicky things. They prefer distilled or rain water. If the roots seem okay like you say they are, let the top layer dry out and give one of those water options a go. 😊

the roots are light brown in color but feel firm and healthy still. it is very possible the grocery store staff watered it with our city’s heavily chlorinated and fluoridated water and simply upset the poor fellow. i have heard calathea are finicky but this is my first… hoping it recovers.

I was gifted the same one from a store and it also had multiple crispy leaf spots, even the new growth. I have not been good with Calatheas in the past, so my fingers are crossed I can rehab it! Good luck to US! Haha
