With the pebble water dish humidity trick, does the tray need to be under the pot or can it just be nearby? I get that it probably needs to be under the plant (because water evaporates up, and I’m guessing that’s how it raises the humidity) but It does it have to be directly under? Sorry if that’s a bit confusing to read.

I put stand the pot on top of the pebbles on the tray. My bonsais like it, and so do my miniature ferns.

Ooh piggy-backing off of this post, how do you guys keep your pebble trays clean? I feel like it’s breeding ground for little flying gnats. I’m sure the easiest way is to just replace the water daily, but is there anything I could add to the water to keep it bug free?

Try mosquito bits. They’re generally used in outdoor areas with water because it attracts mosquitoes and the bits repel them, but for houseplants a lot of people water their plants with “mosquito bit tea” to rid of fungus gnats, and I imagine it would work this way as well.
