I have three problem Alocasias. First off my Yucatán princess is always getting mites (in soil). She does amazing and bounces back and after she puts out a new leaf, the older one starts yellowing and I start to see mites and fuzzy white bugs. Is this a forever maintenance plant where I have to treat for bugs once a month? Second, my Polly is bad, like so bad I don’t even want to show pictures bad. I switched it to hydroponics and it’s slightly better but still browning. No bugs, just struggling to live. What do I do? And lastly, my dark star got spider mites on all but two leaves. I decided to just chop them and new leaves are coming in, but is it common for them to always get spider mites? I want to make sure I keep that one separate if that’s the case. The dark star is in hydro too. All follow a fertilizer schedule and watered as needed. I love Alocasias but I’m struggling with these three and bugs.

    I actually don't have any alocasias; I want some so I'm in this group just to learn-- so obviously take anything I say with a grain of 🧂. But I swear I just saw a Sydney Plant Guy video where he talked about how some of his alocasias were particularly prone to spider mites. Then I saw another post somewhere while searching colocasia care that said something about alocasias and bugs being a problem. I guess they're just really tasty plants!

      I’m really starting to believe that all Alocasias are the bugs favorites and low key regretting them all over my office. I worry for my other plants. I do have them separated into their own groups so that should help. I watch the Sydney plant guy but I haven’t seen that video yet. Makes me not feel that crappy knowing someone like him deals with this level of bugs with Alocasias too haha

    I’ve heard the same about being bug magnets but I have several and never had any pests on them, but the other plants are a different story. The problem with pests is that just one treatment will not get rid of them. They have life cycle stages that you need to kill them at. For mites and mealy bugs, after initial treatment, you should be retreating about every 5 to 7 days for about two months. You can also try a systemic treatment such as Bonide to help prevent future pests. I use insecticidal soap for my pests treatments.

      Good to know. Thank you! I clearly have not been doing it right. I’ll use those treatment methods and do it once a week.

    spider mites & other bugs are common for alocasias. i have several silver dragons and have never personally fought them, but once you discover an infestation you should be retreating the affected plant(s) once a week for the next month or two to kill all of them. treatments often don't kill the eggs. i also recommend repotting the plant completely & checking all the leaves to be sure.
