Is my Alocasia Polly a goner? It has continued to drop leaves so I’m going to try a new location (couple feet away from an east facing window). Afraid to overwater (following the apps suggested watering but the soil is dry again several days early according to my moisture detector). Any and all recommendations welcome.
Not a goner yet. You still have one very healthy leaf. My alocasia recently got down to just 1 green tiny leaf and a couple half yellow ones. I switched it to pon and I’m up to about 4 healthy leaves. Slow going, but it’s improving.

I have this plant. And the older leaves tend to die off in order to produce a new one. So if a old one goes, there’s probably a new one coming in its place. I have it in a south facing window about 6 feet away. So it gets just maybe an hour or two of afternoon light. I definitely follow the app to do watering. I’ve got six new leaves on my plant. This type of plant in my book is kind of a couple leaves of a plant. I joke and call it the one leaf club. Because it doesn’t bush out like a lot of other plants. Don’t panic. This is normal for this type of plant. I would give it a little bit more light than what you have. But not in direct light. Let it dry out a little bit before you water it. And cut those old leaves off because then the energy will go back down to produce the new one.

I water my alocasia when the top layer of soil is dry and never let it get more than 25% dry while in a traditional potting mix. If you switch to semi-hydro that may be different. I’d probably recommend sticking your Alocasia right by the east facing window to give it plenty of bright indirect light (assuming you’re in the northern hemisphere).

I’d echo what others are saying (bright light, they like moisture but not wet feet) but with an additional note: Alocasia naturally have dormancy cycles, and if they get too stressed in the winter they can do that. If it loses all its leaves and it’s definitely not rotten then don’t just throw it away. Tuck it in a cool, dry place and then when spring hits water it and put it in a warm, bright spot. You might find it comes back stronger and with a few babies to boot.
