Of course after being so proud of how well my silver dragon was doing, this happened 😭 Any suggestions? Should I just bite the bullet, cut the leaves off and start over? ❤️🩹 I really want to try to save it since a lot of the leaves seem to have spots of variegation, including the baby I pulled from it..!
Yeah I’d just chop them all off sadly I just had to do the same thing to my silver dragon in January after it had frost damage but now I have two leaves and two more unfurling!

I absolutely would not chop any leaves. Not sure where you heard to do that. I never remove alocasia leaves until they’re almost completely yellowed. She’s going to go through a transitional period. Did you place her in a jar of water covering her roots for a month before placing in semi hydro? If not, that’s why this is happening… putting in water for awhile to grow water roots always helps. Take her out… place her in a cup of water for a month. Change water weekly, remove any dead soil roots… leave water roots alone. Then after a month put her back into the leca (I prefer pon but I’ve heard good things about leca too).
いいね 1件Thanks so much for your response! I’m very new to plants. I put her in water for a week and then placed her in the leca.. she was doing fine for a couple weeks and then this 😩 I’ll try putting her back in water to see how she does, before considering chopping! Thank you.
いいね 1件 Semi hydro is a learning process… I’ve been at it for a year, especially alocasias since they’re so fussy. So don’t worry you’ll get better at it… just don’t ever chop leaves unnecessarily unless it’s got fungus or something. Otherwise always try water for awhile. I’m guessing a week wasn’t long enough for it to grow sufficient water roots, I think if you leave it for a month it’ll do much better in the semi hydro. You do have water in the bottom for the roots to stretch towards right?

New leaf on the right and she’s even pushing out another. I’ve only lost one leaf since putting her in water. Only had to remove a few dead soil roots too. I know she will transition to pon with ease with how well she’s doing in water

いいね 1件 I don’t add anything to the water, I just change it weekly. I use spring water. She had a good root system when I got her because she came in a self watering pot so she had a good water root system already but was still more soil based with her root system. Since placing in water several soil roots did die and others sprouted water roots off of them! It’s such an interesting process. But yeah a lot more people need to talk about the water and the transition process once first placed in the semi hydro because I feel like there’s not that much info on it out there! I had sooo many questions I couldn’t find straight forward answers to. Like my main question was once placing in the semi hydro do I need to go in and remove the dead soil roots after I notice even more water roots… answers were VERY conflicting. But after doing much research I believe you’re not supposed to once it’s placed into the semi hydro set up. Because messing with the roots at all can potentially hurt the water roots and you could have to start all over. Which is exactly what happened to my alocasia Polly. I learned the hard way. I believe the dead soil roots just eventually break down and disintegrate. I don’t believe they will hurt the plant at all as long as water roots are growing. So from now on I’m leaving them. I admit I’m still learning too but I think I’ve soaked up a lot of knowledge this past year and learned from some trial & error.
