just got this beautiful propagation of a alocasia pink dragon today at a plant festival. i also recently got a black velvet alocasia. i want them to thrive and i was hoping someone well experienced could give me all the tips and tricks to keep them alive.
biggest problem i see with alocasias is overwatering or humidity being too high and causing fungal problems. they're also prone to spider mites, thrips, and root rot. they're deep rooters and love a taller pot once they start maturing. i've had alocasia for three years and they've thrived in my normal house conditions- 40-50% natural humidity (i'm in FL, you may need a humidifier to achieve this), a west facing window, and a little wind from my fan. i use a regular potting mix with drainage, and fertilize regularly. i would call them moderate feeders, they can survive without fertilizer but you'll get much better results if you do it. they're a lot simpler than people make them out to be IMO, i just treat them like any other house plant. no special foods, no grow lights, no humidity domes or anything. hoping this helps you a little, good luck!

Alocasia are the “big backs” of houseplants.: they love to eat (fertilizer). Semi-hydro, humidity, and overall consistency are how mine thrive. Best wishes!
