Omg. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? All of my other plants are thriving except for this guy (and a succulent lol long story). He has grown a little taller since I've bought him, but no new growth. I've actually had to cut a few pieces from a couple damaged leaves, but I thought all was good! I did that day one and weeks went by, no stress was shown. I did however remove some mesh that was entangled around the roots as I've heard that was good to do. I was careful, but I think it may have stressed him a bit. A week or so later he had some leaves drop (stem and all 😭). Roots look healthy and it's been probably 2 weeks since I removed the mesh, I figured he would have settled down by now if stressed. Woke up this morning to ANOTHER dropped leaf! What am I doing wrong? Should I give him more sun? Less sun? Soil is still moist. I'm at a loss, please help! The leaf that's hanging is mushy, yesterday it was fine!

    Side note, I was thinking about possibly changing the soil to something better draining? I'm afraid I'll stress him out more if I do that though! Also, no pests. The lighting in the picture is natural sunlight and he's kept in a bathroom for humidity. Maybe the bathroom is too cold? Idk! 😭

      Im no expert but if this were my plant id move him to a spot where he could get a little more light. I’d hold off on repotting for now. That’s just me

      I agree with Robin mainly because I bought one of these as my first alocasia as I had heard they can be finicky but these are supposed to be easier. I must've done everything under the sun to that poor baby, removing the plug gently and repotting removing corms to propagate etc and all the leaves dropped off mine but the bulb was not squishy. I moved mine to a tiny pot bc of rot since I was scared I'd dry him to death but he finally came back and has been growing happily since. So I highly recommend the waiting on the repot unless rot starts to be blatantly obvious. I'd also use a feather duster every week or so to avoid spider mites since they love alocasia.

      What kind of soil did you put in yours in to save it? I had basic potting mix with some bark, coco coir, and very little perlite mixed in and it just wasn't drying/draining like it should have been. I trashed that, and just grabbed the only two I had on hand and mixed them together lol. Succulent/cactus and tropical mix substrate and mixed the two. Going to buy a clay pot with some drainage after it relaxes a little. I've tried soo hard with this plant. lol I believe it's just holding too much moisture though.

      I believe i used miracle grow indoor potting mix and it was probably a 1 to 1 ratio of that, perlite, and orchid bark. Pro tip if you have the option either spay down the perlite with a mister or close the container after adding perlite last so it can be shaken up. Breathing in perlite dust is no fun😭

    Ok! I was thinking the same tbh. I had him under a grow light for a long time and then the leaves were dropping, so I moved him back to the bathroom. I'm at a loss. lol

    If you do repot him i suggest you use a clear container. They sell clear potting pots on Amazon in a variety of sizes. I’m doing this with all of my plants because I want to be able to look at them at a glance to see if they have enough water or if their roots are overcrowded.

    I've seen those and have been tempted. I know it's not rootbound just because I removed mesh from the roots recently. He seems to be staying pretty moist, so I really just want to change the soil out if I do. I guess I could try that! Maybe too much humidity?

    Alocasia are dramatic. But they also love spidermites. Id check it over really well. And usually just treat them anyways, since they just love dem sooooo much 🙄

      It depends, but for most alocasia I use systemic bonide granules

    So, I didn't read everyone else's comments before doing this lol, buuut... I kind of went ahead and changed the soil and actually glad I did. The roots looked good, found a little corm in there lol, healthy all around. It looks like possible start of some rot at the base of one of the stalks. I realized the soil was staying way to damp and wasnt draining/drying out. :/ I'm hoping this fixes the issue. lol We'll see! How much lighting do you guys suggest?

      What saved me from unaliving alocasia ???? Transferring to pon and showering them once a month - the whole plant, underside of leaves to remove pests. I took a class in the fall and this was what was suggested by the “professional” Prior to that I’d unalived at least 5! Now I’ve got 5 that lived thru the winter and no sign of pests!
