This is the Pink Dragon that I brought home in December. It has held onto this one leaf until yesterday when I noticed it was starting to yellow. The roots still look really healthy. My question is, how do I know if my plant is dying vs. going dormant? I know that alocasias also tend to “cycle” when adjusting to a new home. Could that be what’s going on here? Let me know what you think!
I hate to say but it looks like it’s dying. I’d pull it out and check the roots. Soil looks like it’s kept damp. It needs to dry out and needs air. Are there roots on the side of the cup? They might have rotted away. When a plant goes dormant, it just stays the way it is till it’s ready to grow again.
2 likes It was completely dry yesterday and that’s when it started yellowing. I typically add enough water to moisten the fluval stratum/perlite mix but not enough for any sitting water. As soon as it was dry for a day or two it started yellowing. The blue is firm and the roots are pink and white like they’ve always been.
Alocasia love water, till they don't. I would un pot it, remove anything that might be mushy, and spray with peroxide dilution. Then repot with a chunky mix in something with drainage.

3 likesMaybe it needs more nutrients from more soil. The larger pot may help. If it loses its leaf it isn’t necessarily dead either. As long as the base of the plant doesn’t become mushy and the roots look healthy keep it. They can shoot up new growth

You definitely should get it into a pot with drainage holes! Alcoasias do not like wet soil! Did you check to see if the soil down at root level had dried out some? Or did you just eyeball it by looking at the top of the soil. I know my sister lost many plants because of this issue! So I definitely learned from her experience. What type of soil do you have it planted in?
0 likes It’s in a fluval stratum and perlite mix. It’s still in the setup I brought it home in just a month or two ago. I bought it as a one leaf corm. Because the container is clear I can see when it’s dry and I don’t let it dry out for long and it’s been working so far but it dried out for a whole day and I don’t think it liked that.
0 likes Ohhh yeah! It must not have! I was going to ask if you had some perlite in there! Did you repot it? Hopefully that’s all she needed! Another watering and my room! I had one that lost all leaves but because it had a nice strong root system after a month or two it finally started sprouting new leaves!
1 like I haven’t repotted yet! I should be getting it into a mix in the next few days! Hopefully it’ll be happier and regrow for me!
