I picked up a variegated Frydek a few weeks ago, and she’s been thriving! A couple of new leaves already, with two more on the way. She’s starting to look really full in her little pot, and the leaves are beginning to crowd each other. She is in a 3" self watering pot. For those with more Alocasia experience: does this look like multiple plants growing together? I’m not sure if I should separate them or just move her into a slightly larger pot. She’s so pretty, and I’d hate to stress her out if separation isn’t the right move. Open to any advice — still new to Alocasias and learning as I go! 🌿💚

I wouldn’t separate her. There definitely looks to be multiple plants in that set up. Is the inside pot clear? They don’t mind being a bit root bound and I wouldn’t repot unless she’s significantly root bound. Alocasia like bright indirect light - especially the varigated ones. They can be finicky! Some of mine thrive - others have two leaves all the time. Bump up humidity near them if possible All of mine are in pon, semi-hydro, wick set up. I transitioned them in Fall 2024. Before that, they’d do well for awhile - then crash. I rinse them under the shower once per month and that has kept the pests away. They are spider mite magnets!

Yes, clear inside pot. I can see some roots but wouldn't say root bound yet! She is around 60% - 65% humidity with a grow light overhead (I have horrible natural light in my house). I'm thinking I might switch to pon when I size up, as I've heard it's better than soil for the most part. Thanks for the tips!

Hi, do you have a pon recommendation by chance? 😊

I like Lechuza for my alocasia, but if there are chunky roots I use Koly Rocks. You can find her on IG or FB. Hers comes pre-rinsed and ready to use.
