I just found this huge Alocasia for cheap at Costco and loved it so much I immediately grabbed it, but I’ve never had one before. I see online a lot of people immediately repot these to a self watering pot with Pon or leca- is that super necessary, or is it ok to leave it in the soil it came in for a while? I live in a dry place so I’m trying to boost humidity with a pebble tray and other plants. Really don’t wanna kill this one!

That’s a beauty!! I have a similar plant and have left it in the medium it came in and it is doing fantastic. They really really like humidity. My other alocasia were doing ok and surviving but when I put them in a consistently high humidity place they went crazy. I am not a semi-hydro plant grower. I haven’t had good success with it at all. I say do what you know. It is easier for me to identify when to water soil than the pin or leca. I put left in my potting mix. But other than that have found that really self watering seems to be a killer guarantee for these guys to be happy.

I would say leave it in the soil it’s in. It’s beautiful and thriving there! A humidifier might be a good idea for this plant. Congrats & good luck!
