I was given and adopted this baby from my ceramic studio (Mar 16) as it was super struggling, and found a thrips infestation after I got it home. šŸ˜¬ It was covered in splashes of clay and clay dust. Not sure when Iā€™ll be in the clear, but the systemic seems to be working (treatment started 3/18) as I am finding less every morning. What should I do next? Repot in a better soil mix or let it recover and adjust to my home? Repot in a better soil after the 8 weeks of systemic protection ends and when temps will be warmer? I am seeing two new leafs forming. One from the healthier leaf and one from the bottom. Not sure how fast growing an elephant ear is? It used to be a decently sized plant šŸŒ± You can see the size of the snake plant I got too. Feel real lucky even with the pest problem.

    You could apply an additional topical pest spray, to help along the elimination. Since it takes several weeks for the systemic to fully soak in. Elephant ears usually grow fairly well and quickly. Since it moved and is dealing with thrips, you may want to hold off on a repot for a month to let it adjust. Especially with how drama queen alocasia are. In the meantime time you could apply a liquid fertilizer, if you think the soils a bit depleted or not ideal. But if you felt it was safe to repot, you don't have to wait for warmer weather on indoor plants. Just repot, add some Mycorrhizal to help with shock, and re-apply the systemic to the soil

      Yes Iā€™ve been using a natural topical too! I donā€™t have central heating or air (PNW things) so my house is pretty cool, which is why I mentioned warmer weather. My bad for not mentioning it. My poor plants had a rough winter in this new place, but it gets amazing morning and south sun. Thank you for the mycorrhizal tip!

      I'm in WA, rarely heat my place past 65. I still repot indoors whenever. Outdoor are the only plants I follow a more seasonal repot schedule.

    I would cut off that ugly leaf and not wait for the systemic pesticide to absorb into the leaves where they lay eggs. I typically wouldnā€™t be that drastic for a recently acquired plant to avoid shocking it. But, elephant ears bounce back quickly. Plus, cutting it will allow the new shoots to get the energy the big leaf is using. Cutting gets rid of the offending pests and the off springs camping out in that leaf. Additionally, I recommend elevating all the pots so the plants are above the window sill to get full sun. A table, stool, plant shelf/stand or narrow bench would be ideal.šŸŖ“šŸ€

    Following up I chopped the damaged leaf today. Thrips are gone and new leaf is coming in fast
