Ok, so I heard that Alocasias are dramatic. But this whole “drop a full grown healthy leaf to pop out a baby leaf” gives me a mild heart attack EVERY time 😩😩

NicoleeSame! Brought a new one with healthy leaves and as soon as I repot it, the bigger healthy leaves fell off! I was worried I did something wrong!

I’m glad I’m not alone. This is my poly I just got and that medium size leaf has gone on to be with the Lord already.

I tell myself to be patient and observant with what they like! Sometimes moving them to different places may make a difference! I’m also trying different potting mediums!

Same. I try different locations, lighting and airflow. Gonna try the fertilizer suggestion I just got.

AroidmamaHi Nicolee, have you tried LECA semi-hydro for them yet.? We have a A. cupra we are currently trying but I wonder if the LECA is to small? I’ve ordered larger LECA balls to try with the Frydek her leaves are not getting very large. 🤞🏽wish me luck.🍀

plantgeeki've found that this usually happens due to nutrient deficiency. i would call them heavy feeders. all of my alocasias get a splash of all purpose fertilizer with every watering (once a week-ish) and i've never had the leaf cycling issue

Thanks for that tip, I’ve been adding fertilizer every 2-weeks. What’s the NPK you water weekly with? And do you dilute to 1/2 strength recommended instructions?

i use all purpose miracle gro, i add about a half-capful into a gallon of water. not always exact, i kinda eyeball it.

PhilI don’t think the leaf thing is legit. Not with mine anyway. But just some fyi that most are not aware of. You can research it. They will go dormant if they don’t like their environment. All leaves will drop. Keep the soil damp and in one month, three months, whenever they decide the environment is good, you will see growth. My Polly has done it twice. The other thing is their leaves will start looking droopy but still feel strong and healthy. After much research I found out it’s usually because of too much light. That took a lot of digging till I got to horticulturists with degrees. Still controversial. But from my experience it is real.

Hmmmm I have my alocasias under a grow light. Maybe thats too intense for them. I will definitely do some more research. Thank you so much for sharing what you’ve learned!! 😊

😱 is that why my Frydek is looking a bit droopy? My lights in my humidity tent went out, so I am augmenting the lighting with other, probably too strong of lights. Ty, Phil!

I agree then they have the nerve to go completely dormant in the winter. At 1/2 of my Alocasia will go completely dormant. The only two that didn’t was my variegated Frydek and my dragon scale. Drama queens indeed!
