Hey guys! About a year or so ago I bought an Alocatia black velvet from either Sam’s or Costco, I don’t remember which, she was so lovely and one of my favorite plants by far. Dw started to not do so well and she lost all of her leaves, they just fell over so I trimmed them off. She grew back leaves, but every time they would get floppy and fall over so they would break. Now I’m left with 2 sad little bulbs. I’ve planted them in perlite because that’s what’s someone recommended to me so they will establish very healthy roots, but I just don’t know what to do. It makes me so sad to see her like this. If anyone has any advice or theory’s on where I may have went wrong, please let me know!! I really want to try my best to save her!! Thank you so much!! ( pictures are before and now)

Oh no! I was just saying that the best thing to grow it in for now is fluvel stratum. I personally think growing it in this is better than perlite, water, etc. once the plant is healthy again, you can transplant to soil/pon/leca(your choice). Oh btw, make sure to keep the humidity higher by covering it with a cup, bag, etc and keep the alocasia growing in indirect light(like just under a window sill or a bit farther from a grow light)

Alocasia are very temperamental, they need good indirect lighting, somewhat decent humidity as well as nice warm temperatures, usually if any of these start to dwindle so will the alocasia, by being very droopy. Id suggest for the corms (the bulbs) the put a plastic cup on top to keep the humidity nice and once it’s rooting it’ll produce new leaves :)

Thank you very much! I’ll put a dome over it. I think that lighting and temperatures is probably what happened. Do you think I should put it in soil instead of perlite?

no no keep it in perlite but make sure it’s moist, I keep my little corms in sphagnum moss as it retains moisture and humidity pretty well :).

my alocasia have been doing this and i started just keeping them in water instead. so far its going well and im starting to get leaves back but i haven’t done it with the more bush like ones like the black velvet so idk if that would make a big difference or not

Thank you! I did consider putting it in water, I think growing plants in water is so cool!
