I can’t seem to have any luck with my Alocasia Dragons😩 I got the Silver Dragon a few weeks ago and it’s been a constant struggle to keep him alive. Repotted after received but he completely drooped and I moved it to water then fluval. I just got the Dragon Scale a few days ago, repotted straight to fluval to keep in the mini greenhouse and already has yellowing leaves🥹 Could it be transplant shock? Dying soil roots until water roots grow? Do these Alocasias not like to be in fluval? Planning to eventually keep them in semi-hydro hence the repot. I’m keeping them in a mini greenhouse with other baby plants and make sure they have air and run a humidifier too, but repotted everything as I don’t have any plants in normal potting mix. I might be paranoid but I can see a slight yellowing leaf on the Alocasia Micholitziana Frydek in the greenhouse too😭 I thought the Maranta Makoyana will give me headaches🤦‍♀️ #newplantparent

My silver dragon is in orchid bark mixed with indoor potting soil with some pertile. It lost a few leaves when I transferred it. But now it’s pushing out new leaves a lot. I water with half drunk water bottles once a week until the water comes out the bottom. I never use city water because they don’t like it. Alocasia’s are very picky. There is aroid soil on Amazon you can get that they might like. My Alocasia zebrina is in and it loves it.

Thanks for your response, that’s interesting. I repotted my Black Velvet to an aroid mix and leaves were a bit soft at first, but bounced back in a few days. It had a healthier root system and a bit more mature so dealt with the change well. These little ones barely have any roots to support themselves so wondering if I need to grow them in water first😓

Root powder will help roots grow.

I don’t immediately repot a healthy plant until after quarantine. Plus, I don’t want to add transplant shock to transport shock as it becomes acclimated to my environment. It typical to see a leaf go yellow. I have 5 alocasias that arrived in coco coir only potting mix. The smallest is 4 inches tall. The tallest is a 2 feet Zebrina. They like the mix. So, I never repotted.

I was aware of the transplant shock and how sensitive they are, but never realised until I experienced this myself. Mine all arrived in normal potting soil so wanted to repot to soiless mix or fluval to grow stronger roots as I experienced issue with soil and lack of drainage that caused root rot. Glad to hear your Alocasias are doing well!

What water are you using? If it is tap water switch to distilled.

I’m using filtered tap water. Would it help switching from your experience? I can try distilled on the next watering round.

I would switch to distilled if it were me. I use filtered tap water on all my plants but I found my Alocasia and ferns didn’t like it still and when I switched to distilled water for the ferns and Alocasia over time they all began to thrive and no crusty brown edges. That being said it is also extremely important to give them a lot of bright light at the same time.
