I received an Alocasia Mickey Mouse variegated TC in a giveaway. It’s my first TC and besides getting a TC acclimation kit, I I don’t know what else to do. I’m planning on ordering fluval and perlite which is what the seller recommended, but I thought I would ask the good people of Planta for their advice. First time TC Owner AND first time Alocasia owner. Although I have admired them my whole life. I grew up down the road from a neighbor with a GIANT elephant ear plant and I always wanted one.

    Rinse the agar off really really well, think it’s off rinse it again. Some people actually cut the roots off, personal choice. I dip in a hydrogen peroxide mix 2:1 ratio after trimming off roots/leaves or anything I want to remove. Keep it at 100 % humidity in your AK with just water. I monitor mine for condensation in about 3-4 hours and if it’s not much or any, I mist a little bit. Put it under a grow light, not in a window. No fertilizer until maybe week 3 and dilute it. When it looks happy and pushing a new leaf or you see roots, start opening it a few minutes each day. Some people also put a hole in the dome of their kit but I reuse mine so I don’t. Mickey Mouse are humidity lovers so I might do a little longer acclimation. Have fun!

      And I use fluval and perlite and have found it’s the best and not having to water a lot. I also top it with perlite so the leaves aren’t sitting against the wet fluval.
