Hello! I got a new white princess philodendron, not realizing they are considered a harder to care for plant. I’m still fairly new to caring for plants, and would love any advice!

Is that what planta told you? I don’t have one, but I remember one time putting a plant in and it said it wasn’t recommended for me and it was “hard” to care for. At the time I thought, hmmmmm, not what the shop owner said. So I think I decided that the app decides on recommendations based on a) plants you currently have b) how well you check the boxes on the care schedules and c) what your light is like in your home. 🤷🏻♀️would love to hear other people’s thoughts.

That is definitely fair. Planta is definitely the one who said it, and I do have a bad habit of completing tasks without checking them off right away. I see the notifications in the morning and do them without opening the app. And I have started with easy plants

I just bought a plant today, added it just now and it told me it’s “hard”. 🤣😩. I didn’t ask the shop owner cause it’s large and wasn’t too much. Plus I had 900 other questions about other plant things. I tend to ignore plants sometimes. So I think if a plant needs a little extra attention, Planta tells me “ooooooo, she can’t ignore it or it will be unalive soon”
1 j'aimeI does depend on factors like you said, what disappoints me is it should tell you what you need to do in order to have them. If it’s just humidity because I live in a dryer location then say so. I wish it gave you advice as to how to not make it “too hard” for me to grow rather than just saying not recommended

That would absolutely be helpful!!!
0 J'aimePut it in bright light, and only water when the soil is completely dry. It would probably also be happy if you ran a humidifier nearby.

I have always been told they don’t like full sun. Mine is in an east facing window and they don’t like to dry out. It’s a tropical plant. They do like humidity.
0 J'aimeDespite being tropical plants, philodendrons are actually somewhat drought tolerant, and like to mostly dry out between waterings. Variegated plants are also much more prone to root rot.

This is one of my easiest plants to take care of. I water when almost completely dry and I check the soil with a wooden skewer. I only use this app to track all my plants and use the water schedule as a reference as to when I need to check the soil. Good luck!
4 J'aimeI recommend taking it out of that soil and using an aroid soil mix, they also like bright indirect light and high humidity. I keep mine under grow lights and the humidity level is above 60%.

I read that they do well in the coconut fiber, which is what it’s in. Is that not the case?

Mine says experienced 😂🤣. I don’t think I chose that, BUT it also says my commitment is medium, which would explain why plants that might need a little extra attention are listed as “hard” for me. Thanks for pointing out that setting.

I have one. It’s not hard. I have mine in an east facing window. They don’t want to be water logged but also don’t want to be dried out. So water when top layer is dry. I use distilled water with 1/4 strength fertilizer every time I water.
