Hey, I’m trying to get my pink princess philo to grow more pink… | Philodendron Parents | Planta-Community

Hey, I’m trying to get my pink princess philo to grow more pink leaves! Most of the pink leaves that grow only get so big before they start browning at the edges and withering up. My coworker told me a big chop should fix it. Any advice?

Would love to know about this too. The leaves on mine got smaller and smaller so repotted and lopped the top off. No new growth yet but I’m always up for some advice 🤞🏻

Side note: the section I chopped is in water and is growing a new leaf! IN WATER!! 😀

Was very shocked when I spotted this.. very excited to see if there’s any pink when it unfurls 😀

A chop would be more helpful if the plant had reverted to green, but it sounds like you’re still getting the pink; it’s just dying off faster than you’d like. Keep in mind that the pink will never last as long as the green, and the more/purer the pink, the shorter that leaf will survive. That said, there are some ways to optimize to keep it around as long as possible. A lot of this really comes down to lighting, and it’s gonna be trial and error. On the one hand, the pink can’t photosynthesize so the plant needs plenty of light to maintain pink areas. On the other, the pink is much more light-sensitive (chlorophyll’s whole purpose is helping the plant convert ionizing radiation into stored energy, so without it that radiation can much more easily burn the plant, hence the browning and withering.) To strike the right balance you may need to try adjusting its proximity to the light source to see if you can prolong the pink while keeping a good growth rate. You can also look at other conditions as well, like making sure the plant has good humidity and potting mix. For leaf size specifically, pink princesses will always get bigger with a physical support, all other factors being equal. Consider a moss pole or even just a piece of rough wood so the aerial roots can grab on.
