This is my heart leaf philo, my very first plant and the one that started my addiction to plants. I bought it from a woman a few years ago. She had it planted in a wire birdcage and that cage was planted down in a pot. I repotted it right after I bought it. I pulled the cage up and planted it in another pot with new dirt. Looking back, I now wish I had removed the plant from that cage then. Being brand new to the plant world at that time, I had no idea how big it would get or that it would eventually need to come out of that cage. This is where I desperately need some advice. She badly needs to be repotted with fresh dirt. The part of the plant that has been in the cage has not been getting sufficient light and has been very crowded in that area. The new leaves are having a hard time getting out and uncurling. I have also noticed that in this same area the new leaves are piggybacking off of other leaves if that makes sense. Some of the new leaves are small and extremely delicate. Over the last few years the plant has grown in/out of the cage-every part of the cage. There is a trellis standing up next to the pot that supports a large part of the plant. Due to the size and the way it has grown there was no way for me to physically take the plant out of the cage without causing great damage. I asked my son to remove the top of the cage as well as about half of the vertical cage “wall” using wire cutters. Hopefully you can see in the pictures what I’m left with. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to remove this plant in the easiest, safest way possible? I’m assuming it will take a few people to get this done. I don’t want to do this but I’m afraid I’m going to have to remove it in pieces, placing those pieces in water until roots start growing and then pot those pieces in one big pot☹️☹️I greatly appreciate any and all suggestions!!
